This summer's workshop explores form, function, aesthetic values, textures, tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt and wood. Works will be made from start to finish during the workshop. Participants develop a contemporary and historic understanding of the unique qualities and processes of salt- and wood-firing and learn to work with the ancient processes of the Anagama kiln. The resulting colors and textures are totally unique to the process and to each fire.

Nurture and grow your personal aesthetic. Step outside the ordinary and live in the extraordinary in this exceptional two-week experience of creating clay works, decorating, and firing with salt and wood on the MWPAI and PrattMWP campus.

TIMING: Workshop will begin on Monday, June 17 at 8 a.m. in the Ceramics Studios. The workshop will end early afternoon on Sunday, June 18 to allow for participants to travel home.

CLAY: Participants will be provided with up to 50lbs of clay body of their choice (porcelain, T3 or Z stoneware, and access to studio clay body) during the workshop. Any additional clay is available for purchase. All cone 10 clay bodies, glazes, and slips used in salt and wood firing are excellent for both Salt kiln and the Anagama.

SURFACE: A variety of slips and oxides are provided and will greatly enhance the firing process. Glazing should be limited to the inside of vessels since the outside surface of the vessels need to interact with the salt and the ash.

Optional on-campus housing is available. Please review costs , policies, what is and is not included on the housing pages. Check-in is Sunday, June 16.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING:
Other options include local campsites, AirBnB rentals, and local bed & breakfast establishments. Transportation during the workshop is the responsibility of the participant.

TUITION: Full payment is required to complete registration. Spots may not be reserved without payment.
Fees cover all basic materials, first 50lbs of clay, and glaze. Tuition does not include food though some studio breakfasts, snacks, and beverages are provided. On-campus housing is available for additional fee. 

WORKSHOP ASSISTANT WAIVERS:  Attendees may apply to be workshop assistants during the this workshop. One to two waivers are issued. Potential candidates must apply, be interviewed, and plan to live in shared campus housing. Compensation will be a tuition waiver for the workshop ($500). Assistants are still responsible for materials fee ($50) and single or shared housing fees. Workshop Assistants must arrive to campus the Friday before the workshop begins. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, housing check in and check out duties, studio clean up and assisting, working with instructors on projects through out the workshop. If a participant has registered and paid for the workshop to secure a spot and then applies and receives a waiver, they will be issued a refund.

WORKSHOP REFUND + CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refunds for cancellation will be made up to 30 days prior to the first day of the workshop ( May 17, 2019). Cancellations must be received on a business day. Under 30 days, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctors note.
If unforeseen circumstances or under enrollment cause MWPAI to cancel the workshop, registrants will receive a full refund for tuition and housing. MWPAI is not responsible for travel or other reservations upon cancellation.

ABOUT THE CERAMICS STUDIO: The MWPAI pottery studio encompasses 3,500 square feet of the historic carriage house Ceramics and Sculpture Studio Building. It is the best equipped ceramics facility in the area. Assets include over a dozen electric wheels, a slab roller, extruder, mixers, electric kilns, and a Bailey Car kiln. The kiln shed is equipped with large salt kilns, downdraft kiln, and an anagama kiln. The shed is the hub for workshops and for learning the fundamentals of salt and wood firing. The second floor is home to the Sunithi S. Bajekal Small Works Gallery and the Vincent R. Clemente Ceramic Resource Room, a library of 250 ceramic books,magazines, and DVD demos for research and inspiration.
